DAPHNE (0-2) AT ALMA BRYANT (1-0)
Time/place: Friday at 7 p.m., Hurricane Stadium, Irvington
In the past week: Daphne lost to Carver-Montgomery 27-13; Alma Bryant defeated Holtville 35-29.

The thin one: Class 7A, Region 1 starter for both teams. … Daphne hasn’t started the season 0-3 on the field since 1995. The Trojans were also technically 0-3 in 2019, but that came only after losing a win over Spanish Fort in the second game of the season. They led 14-13 in the final minutes of last week’s game at Carver-Montgomery before the Wolverines rallied for the win. Nick Clark rushed for 86 yards and a TD on 26 carries. Cameron Long returned a 70-yard punt for a TD. … Alma Bryant opened Bart Sessions’ second season as head coach with a 35-29 road win at Holtville. The game was originally scheduled to be an Alma Bryant home game, but had to be moved due to rain last week on the Gulf Coast. Christian Mose was 5-for-10 for 100 yards and 2 TDs. He also rushed for 135 yards and a TD on 16 carries. DD Lambert caught TD passes of 30 and 70 yards. The Hurricanes are trying to end a seven-game losing streak in the region. … Sessions is a former Daphne assistant who helped the Trojans win the 2010 state title as defensive coordinator.
FAITH ACADEMY (1-0) AT GULF SHORES (2-0)

In the past week: Faith Academy defeated Elberta 42-6 in their season opener; Gulf Shores defeated Citronelle 45-26.

The thin one: Both teams are 1-0 in Class 5A, Region 1 play. … Gulf Shores leads the series 6-2. The teams last played in 2017. … Veteran coach Jack French is 37-13 in his fifth year at Faith. The Rams had never made the AHSAA playoffs before French’s arrival. They’ve done it in each of their first four seasons, including a quarterfinal run a year ago and a semifinal run in 2020. Last week, Faith’s Jacori Stabler and Tyrell Dotson returned interceptions for touchdowns against Elberta. Christian Burnette rushed for 105 yards and scored on an 80-yard touchdown run. He also caught a touchdown pass. … Gulf Shores is trying to improve to 3-0 for the first time in school history. Junior Ronnie Royal has 426 all-purpose yards and 7 TDs in two games. Brendon Byrd is 22 of 34 for 383 yards and 3 TDs. He also rushed for 97 yards and a TD. JR Gardner has rushed for 144 yards and 3 TDs on 18 carries.
JACKSON (1-0) AT ORANGE BEACH (1-0)

The thin one: First meeting between the two schools and features as the first Class 4A, Region 1 match for both teams. Orange Beach is making the jump from Class 2A to Class 4A with first-year coach Jamey DuBose. … Aggies freshman QB Landon Duckworth accounted for 5 TDs in last week’s win. He completed 8 of 16 passes for 125 yards and 2 TDs and added 10 carries for 52 yards and 3 more touchdowns. Junior WR Nasir Powell caught 2 TD passes. Senior Jalen Pickens had 14 tackles on defense. … Orange Beach had the final week off after opening with a win in Pensacola, Fla. UAB commitment Chris Pearson had 2 returns for 120 yards, made 12 tackles and forced a fumble. … Jamey DuBose is only the second coach in Orange Beach history, after Chase Smith. DuBose has won 138 games and 3 state titles in the previous 15 years as head coach at Alabama.
SARALAND (2-0) AT ST. FROM PAUL (1-1)

The thin one: Saraland has won all three previous meetings with St. Paul’s. … The Spartans are averaging 46 points through their first two games. Second-year QB KJ Lacey has completed 72 percent of his passes for 513 yards and 7 TDs. Sophomore Santae McWilliams (128 yards, 2 TDs) is the leading rusher and sophomore Ryan Williams (16 receptions, 233 yards, 5 TDs) is the leading receiver. Jeff Kelly is 106-34 in his 12th year as Spartans head coach. … Ham Barnett earned Victory No. 1 as St. Paul’s head coach last week. Henry Lapeyrouse was the Saints’ defensive star against McGill. He had 4 solo tackles, 6 assists, 4 sacks, 7 QB rushes and a fumble recovery. UAB commitment Chris Bracy and Drew Williamson rushed to score against the Yellow Jackets. … Both teams are 1-0 in Class 6A, Region 1 play.
ST. MICHAEL (1-1) AT BAYSIDE ACADEMY (2-0)

The thin one: Class 4A, Region 1 starter for both teams. … St. Michael bounced back from an opening loss to Class 6A Gulf Shores with a win over Chickasaw. In two games, QB Josh Murphy is 24-of-45 for 384 yards and 4 TDs. Ezra Sexton has rushed for 238 yards and 2 TDs on 42 carries and also had 7 receptions for 156 yards and 2 TDs. Bray Green has 12 receptions for 185 yards and 2 TDs. The defense is led by Clay Barr (17 tackles, 6 TFLs, 2 sacks, 1 fumble recovery). … Despite coaching perhaps his youngest team, Phil Lazenby has the Admirals off to a 2-0 start. Tait Moore had 2 TDs last week on the road and Sammy Dunn and Jacob Stewart each had one. Rookie LB Brennen Yamane had 9 tackles to lead the defense. Lazenby is 111-67 in his 16th year at the school.
