Otero County – The Colorado Department of Transportation and its contracting partner CapitalTezak Joint Venture will begin the replacement of three structures on US Highway 350 near Timpas at mileposts 56.5, 57.1, and 57.5 as part of the Region 2 Bridge Bundle project.
Starting the week of September 19, the assembly of the structures at the project site will begin. Aluminum box culverts were selected for the project instead of concrete box culverts as they can be manufactured in a shorter period of time, are lightweight, and can be fully assembled on the shoulder of the roadway and lifted into place once. the existing bridge is removed. Preventing and minimizing potential shipping/supply chain delays, as well as shorter periods of lane closures and detours, reduce the overall impacts to the traveling public.
During construction of the structure, motorists can expect to see signaling operations as needed on US 350. From late October through November 2022, crews will require a full 21-day closure of US 350 with a detour for bridge replacements. The construction of these three structures will last approximately three months.
During the full closure of US 350, at Mile Point 56 near Timpas, motorists should detour at the north end of the project at La Junta and use Colorado Highway 10 to Walsenburg. At the southern end of the project, US 350 will close at MP 60. Use Interstate 25 north to Walsenburg and CO 10 to La Junta.
Further project progress
As part of the Region 2 Bridge Assembly project, construction of one of 17 structures is currently underway on Colorado Highway 9 near Guffey in MP 15.9. In addition to completing the three Timpas structures this fall, crews plan to start and finish construction on another structure on US 350 north of Delhi at MP 47.1 by the end of 2022. About the project
The Region 2 Bridge Assembly Project consists of the replacement of seventeen (17) rural structures on critical highway corridors in southeastern and central Colorado. The rural highways that house the structures are essential in allowing not only the mobility of the population living in the southern and eastern parts of the state, but are also key to supporting intra- and interstate commerce, particularly as it pertains to the movement of agricultural products and access to tourist destinations.
